  • To connect to a chat server, go to Options/Connect.  Click add.  Enter the server name (e.g., irc.freenode.net).  Click Add.  Then click Connect to IRC server.
  • Go to Options/Connect/Options and click "connect on startup" and "reconnect on disconnection."
  • If you frequent multiple chat rooms, you can go to them automatically when you connect.
    Go to Options/IRC/Perform and enter /join #roomName
  • MIRC can not always tell when you have been disconnected.  Go to options/IRC/Perform and enter /timer 0 30 ping $me.  This will ping the server every 30 seconds.
  • If you want sounds, go to Options/Sounds/Requests and click "accept sound requests."  Then extract this zipfile into any directory you choose (e.g., d:\mirc\sounds).  Set the "Wave file folder" to the directory you extracted the files into.
  • Yes!  You can have multiple MIRC windows open at the same time in order to chat on different servers at once.  Just invoke mirc as:
    mirc32.exe -sServerName
  • Use /me to think or do something.  Type /me followed by an action statement.  For example, /me smiles outputs
    * devguy smiles
  • Read the list of IRC emoticons
  • Read the list of IRC commands
  • See the help for additional IRC commands
  • "Flashing" lets you know when new messages have arrived.  It causes the MIRC icon to flash in the start bar whenever someone enters a message when MIRC isn't the active application.  Select flashing by clicking on the room window's left icon.
